Book Introduction

The theme examined in this book is the role of broadcasting to overcome differences between the two Koreas. Even in the current ‘Big Bang’ era of media, where various forms of media are all engaged in intense competition, some may think that broadcasting is not important enough to emphasize in modern times. However, the reality of inter-Korean relations is constantly fluctuating, and the characteristics and industrial situation of broadcast media are also rapidly changing.

Is it still valid to present public values aimed for by broadcasting as ‘strengthening national unity’ and ‘unification’? Even if it is in name only, will these ideological values continue to be maintained in the rapidly changing broadcasting market environment, or will it weaken or disappear altogether? What should be the practical methodology utilized if we want to continue to solidify unification-oriented values through broadcast media until the day of national unification? This book hopes to answer all of these questions.
