2013.01.24

Seoul National University Unification Studies Research Series – 12

Authors: Lim Hong-bae, Song Tae-soo, Jeong Byeong-gi

Book Introduction

Imagine the Korean Peninsula 20 years after unification. The method used to achieve unification is important, but post-unification political-ideological integration and socio-economic-cultural integration are also significant challenges. In this book, the authors take a look at the example of Germany. There, the East and West have long differed in ideology – just as the North and South differ on the Korean Peninsula. The example of Germany provides important implications for imagining the Korean Peninsula post-unification and seeking the right path to unification.

The book contains a record of the 20 years following German reunification up until the present. It examines the fields of economics, society, education, research and development, culture, energy, and the environment. By collecting and systematically analyzing policy reports and statistics published in Germany, the basic data can be used to objectively determine the level of national integration in major areas. These were compiled by presenting the national integration indicators of Germany on the 20th anniversary of reunification.
