Summary
The second general book of the SNU IPUS post-socialist studies series is ‘The History and Politics of Socialist Vietnam in the Eyes of Unification Researcher’ was published this year. It is set in the context an era where the ‘Road to Vietnam’ was being talked about as interest in North Korean ‘reform and opening up’ and peace on the Korean peninsula were heating up. Vietnam, which is ‘successfully’ carrying out reforms and opening up while maintaining its socialist system, is showing the future path that North Korea could take. However, many people do not know the historical process Vietnam went through to reform and open its doors. There is also a lack of understanding about the shadow cast by Vietnam’s ‘Reform and Opening’. This report is based on the notion that Vietnams political economy, foreign relations, and culture must be understood in the past, present, and future in order to talk about the ‘Road to Vietnam’ [in regards to North Korea].
