Book Introduction

Since the division of the two Koreas, the vocabulary of the two Koreas have diverged considerably, from everyday living terms to industry-specific terminology. This is due to several factors, but the development of a unified Korean language is one of the most pressing tasks for unification. The Korean language should be unified in the future via Inter-Korean Exchanges that take place before the eventual unification of the two Koreas. South and North Korea have been making efforts to unify their vocabulary both at the government level and at the private level. As a result, some achievements have been made, and others have yet to be realized. Under these circumstances, this book aims to examine the activities of the two Koreas to unify their vocabulary. It analyzes the achievements and limitations of their efforts, and present tasks and directions of the unified vocabulary to be developed in the future.
