<Abstract>
Migrants’ political attitudes are often different from those of their compatriots at home. We utilize a unique dataset on votes cast by Czech and Polish migrants in national elections in their home countries to examine three alternative explanations of migrant voting  behavior: political re-socialization, economic self-selection and political self-selection. The results indicate that the political preferences of migrants change significantly in the wake of migration as migrants adapt to the norms and attitudes prevailing in the host country. There is little evidence that migrants’ political attitudes are due to self-selection with regard to either their premigration political attitudes or economic characteristics.

피드르묵 교수는 해외 이민자의 투표성향이 자국민과 상당한 차이를 보인다는 사실을 체코와 폴란드의 사례를 통해 검증했다. 선진국에 거주하는 이민자들은 자국민보다 더 보수적인 정당에 투표를 했으며, 반대로 후진국에 거주하는 이민자들은 자국민보다 더 진보적인 정당에 투표하는 경향이 발견되었다. 이러한 차이를 보이는 원인을 설명하는 이론으로 피드르묵 교수는 경제적 선택이나 정치적 선택 이론을 배제하고 정치재사회화 이론을 주장했다. 즉 이주민들이 선진국에 거주하면서 그나라의 규범과 가치에 영향을 받기 때문이라는 것이다. 이들은 습득한 자유규범과 태도를 자국에 확산시키는 역할도 하고 있다고 주장했다.
