한동대학교에서 국제지역학과 영문학을 전공하고, 연세대학교 통일학협동과정에서 국제관계(북중관계)를 공부했다. 미국 Syracuse Univeristy Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs 사회과학부에서 “North Korea’s Policy Toward the United States: Rapprochement to Confrontational Diplomacy in the 1970s and the 1990s”라는 주제로 2021년 박사학위를 받았다. 귀국해서 서울대학교  행정대학원 박사후 연구원으로 일했다. 연구분야는 동북아시아 국제정치, 국제정치이론, 북한의 대미, 대중 외교행태, 남북관계와 통일담론 등이다. 최근 진행한 연구로는 “North Korea’s Foreign Policy Behaviors toward the United States: Constructive Entanglements in Historical Factors Since the 1970s”(2023), “북한 핵 사용의 공세적 법제화를 통해 본 대(對)미 접근: 내적균형(Internal balancing)의 개념을 중심으로(2013-2022)”(2023), “Two Imperative Situations and North Korea’s Diplomacy toward the United States: Rapprochement to Confrontational Diplomacy in the 1970s and the 1990s” 등이다.
